Councillors leave Aberdeenshire ruling group in protest over Trump fiasco

Councillors leave Aberdeenshire ruling group in protest over Trump fiasco - Click for larger version Three further Councillors are to leave the Aberdeenshire Council Administration group. They will join Liberal Democrat Councillor Debra Storr who resigned from her party group last November.

The three Councillors are Paul Johnston, Sam Coull, and Martin Ford The four will form a separate group on Aberdeenshire Council.

The reduction in the size of the administration group will leave the council balanced between 34 administration councillors and 34 in other groups. The Liberal Democrats are no longer the largest group on the Council.

The three councillors resigned the day after Aberdeenshire Council refused to 'set the record straight' about Cllr Johnston being cleared by the Standards Commission following a thorough investigation. The Councillor, had been cleared of any breach of the code, but only six councillors voted to record the facts by adding a note to the minutes of the meeting where the unfounded allegations were made against Councillor Johnston.

Despite repeated calls for the leader of the Council, Cllr Anne Robertson, to apologise to Cllr Johnston, no apology was forthcoming at yesterday's meeting.

Said Cllr Paul Johnston: "I am very disappointed that most of my colleagues did not wish to record the fact that I had been cleared by adding a note to the minutes of the October Council meeting where the matter was discussed. I was even more disappointed that I received no apology from those who had condemned me before the Standards Commission had even investigated. There was no fair process or natural justiceā€

"The behaviour of my colleagues has been such that I have decided to leave the Liberal Democrat council group. Cllr Coull and Cllr Ford are leaving on the same basis."

All the councillors involved have stressed their commitment to their continuing role as councillors. They have all pledged to honestly represent their constituents and ensure fair representation in the Council.
