Cautious welcome to Council's u-turn over Paddy's

Cautious welcome to Council's u-turn over Paddy's - Click for larger version Traders have cautiously welcomed the council's apparent u-turn over the future of Paddy's Market in Glasgow.

After a protest last week which saw around sixty traders and supporters joined by SNP and Green Party councillors outside Glasgow City Council Chambers, Labour's Councillor George Ryan seemingly indicated a u-turn by the council over the future of the 150 year old Glasgow institution.

The revelation, which has been welcomed cautiously by traders, came in an interview Councillor Ryan gave to STV after the Council's Executive meeting met to ratify it taking over the head lease from Network Rail.

In the interview Councillor Ryan clearly states that Glasgow City Council now wishes to work with current traders to develop a new look Paddy's Market and to ensure current legitimate traders are given the option to continue trading once the redevelopment work is complete.

A spokesperson for Paddy's Market traders said:

"Whilst we welcome this apparent shift in tone and direction from the Council we will continue to fight and enlist support until the Council provide concrete reassurance of the future of Paddy's and our future livelihoods - in writing. Until such times we will keep the pressure on and encourage the people of Glasgow and beyond to continue to support us in preserving an essential part of Glasgow which has served the people for over 150 years."
