NUJ members at both the daily and Sunday titles of the Express and Star took part in a 24-hour strike over pay which saw dozens of journalists on picket lines.
The strike, which has been hailed as a major success by the NUJ, is the first full-day strike by journalists on a major national newspaper in 18 years.
NUJ General Secretary, Jeremy Dear, said:
"Our members are standing firm in their resolve to fight for a fair deal. This strike is about low pay and broken promises. It's incredible that management at Express Newspapers are forcing their journalists into taking this action.
"These papers, now more than ever, need properly resourced journalism, yet all the company has to offer is cutbacks and miserly pay. Over the last few weeks it has become increasingly apparent that the Express and Star don't value their journalists. Our members have made it very clear that they will make a stand to ensure they get the recognition they deserve."
This was the first of three 24 hour strikes planned by NUJ members which are expected to see up to 250 of its members at Express Newspapers, publishers of the Daily and Sunday Express and the Daily and Sunday Star, walk out again from 6am on the next 2 Fridays in protest at the 3 per cent pay offer.
