Top Employment Lawyer Wins Prestigious Award - Click for larger version One of Scotland's leading employment lawyers, Marie Macdonald, has won a national Human Resources Award.

Marie, Head of the Employment Law Unit and a senior partner at Glasgow law firm Miller Samuel LLP, was nominated for the HR Employment Lawyer and Partner of the Year Award by her clients, and was announced winner last night after beating off competition from leading fellow professionals.

The award was presented at Prestonfield House, Edinburgh, last night at the gala dinner for the HR Network (Scotland) National Awards. The awards are designed to recognise, acknowledge and reward achievements of HR professionals from all levels of human resource management and associated professions throughout Scotland.

Marie, who is also accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as an employment law specialist said: "I am very honoured to have won this award in the face of strong competition. Building up our employment and diversities business is a key element of Miller Samuel's strategic plan: providing our clients with the first class services of a niche commercial law firm."

"For my clients to have nominated me for this award, not to mention having won it against competition from very competent colleagues, is just fantastic. Employment and equalities law is a demanding but rewarding field of practice. As lawyers we go the extra mile to provide a first-rate service for our clients. It's really nice to feel appreciated by them and I am very proud to have won."

Marie added: "Many employers and employees find it increasingly difficult to understand and interpret the often complex rules and regulations governing fairness in the workplace. It is essential that clients are provided with practical, timely and tailored advice against the backdrop of complex and constantly changing employment law."

Marie also has considerable experience in civil litigation specialising in personal injury, professional and clinical negligence claims. She acted successfully for some 600 Scottish women in the US silicone breast implant litigation.

Michael Samuel, Chairman of Miller Samuel said: "I am delighted that Marie has won the award. Marie is a highly skilled and experienced solicitor who deals with each case using her detailed knowledge of the law and understanding of the facts and complexities. As a firm, we see our future as based on the quality not the quantity of our lawyers. Marie deals thoughtfully with her clients and appreciates the personal concerns that they experience. They clearly recognise her commitment to them. Miller Samuel is proud of Marie's achievements, which have brought great prestige to the firm."

Marie qualified as a solicitor in 1985, originally working for Miller Samuel as an assistant solicitor before being assumed as a partner in 1989. Marie is also a member of the Law Society of Scotland Employment Law Group, the Scottish Discrimination Law Association and a solicitor appointed to the panel of the Equalities Commission in Scotland dealing with sex, race and disability discrimination.
